The short answer
The most common wedding shopping problems are not only about the outfit. They come from late delivery, insufficient alteration time, missing accessories, repeated looks, unclear event assignments and no plan for steaming, packing or transportation. Every complete look should be tested and packed before wedding week.
For a multi-day South Asian wedding, a bride may wear several complete looks, and each one depends on a blouse fitting, jewelry, shoes, dupatta pins and someone to carry it to the right room at the right time. Shopping is finished only when every look has been tried on complete and packed.
How early should wedding outfits be ordered?
Order as early as your designs allow, and work backward from the date the outfit must be complete, not the wedding date.
Custom and imported outfits can take many weeks to arrive, and arrival is only the beginning: alterations, blouse fittings and a final try-on still need time. Ask each designer for a realistic delivery date in writing, then add time for shipping delays and at least one round of alterations.
For outfits coming from overseas, ask how shipping, customs and delays are handled, and who is responsible if a package is held.
What should be checked during the final fitting?
Check the complete look, not just the outfit.
Wear the actual shoes to confirm hem length, test the blouse with the jewelry that will sit on it, pin the dupatta the way it will be worn, and sit, walk and raise your arms as you will during the ceremony. Note anything that needs a second adjustment while there is still time.
How should jewelry and accessories be organized?
Organize accessories by event, not by type.
Place each event's jewelry, bangles, hair pieces, pins and footwear together with that event's outfit, and keep a written or photographed list of what belongs in each set. High-value jewelry needs a separate security plan and a named person responsible for it.
A short printed list inside each jewelry pouch lets a family member confirm nothing is missing while the bride is already getting ready.
Who should transport the outfits?
Assign one named person, not the whole family, to move each set of outfits.
When everyone is responsible, no one is. A named person knows which bags travel to which venue, confirms they arrived, and brings them back afterward. For events at different venues, decide in advance where each outfit is steamed and where the bride will change.
What belongs in an emergency kit?
Keep a small kit that solves the problems most likely to happen on the day.
Useful items include safety pins, dupatta pins, a small sewing kit, fashion tape, blotting papers, pain relief, bandages, stain remover, a phone charger, a portable steamer and copies of the contact list for the tailor and designer.
